CableSpring

Providing an enhanced solution to the configuration of dynamic cables for floating wind turbines.
Current configuration technologies are simply not suitable for many offshore renewable projects.
SeaThor have worked closely with developers, installers and cable manufacturers to perform dynamic configuration analysis, finding working solutions for cables. We used this expertise to develop the CableSpring system.

CableSpring, using uniquely placed elements, provides cable uplift with inherent bend protection – protecting the asset between modules.
CableSpring is designed to provide a graduated step down to the seabed, creating an expanding and contracting spring like system.
Analytically, this has been shown to have multiple benefits for Floating Wind projects, including reduced top tension and curvature ranges on the cable (reducing risk of failure and fatigue) and increasing the allowable offsets of the floating body which can lead to significant savings in the mooring system.

CableSpring system is designed with back deck installation in mind, specifically designed to be fully split to allow for installation onto the cable at any stage during mobilisation.
The system is modular, allowing the design to be bespoke to suit individual client and project needs.
The system is secured using a central clamping element, with daisy chained buoyancy and bend protection devices along the required length.
Service life is considered throughout, and engineered choices made to ensure that the materials selected are suitable for the design requirements.

SeaThor have been awarded a significant grant as part of the ORE Catapult FLOWB project to develop the CableSpring technology from concept to prototype demonstration.

Working with partners at ORE Catapult and University of Exeter, the project will undertake both protype fatigue testing and offshore deployment of a cable with CableSpring protection in 50m water depth.

SeaThor are actively seeking partners for longer term testing and validation in a relevant environment (TRL 5/6).

This is envisaged to comprise a full-scale demonstrator system, ideally attached to a floating device (Wind, Wave or Tidal).

Potential to extend the demonstration to include fibre optic shape monitoring of the cable with additional partners.
